What this calculator does

This free retirement calculator answers the question everyone actually asks: how much money do I need to retire? Enter the annual income you want in retirement and it works backward to the nest egg required (your income ÷ your withdrawal rate). Then it grows your current savings and monthly investing to your target retirement age and tells you whether you're on track — and if not, what monthly amount closes the gap.

Common questions

How much do I need to retire?

A good rule of thumb is 25 times the annual income you want in retirement. For $50,000 a year that's about $1,250,000. That target assumes a 4% withdrawal rate; if you want a safer 3.5%, the multiple rises to about 28×. This calculator lets you set your own income target and withdrawal rate.

Can I retire at 55, 60, or 62?

You can retire as soon as your investments reach your retirement number. Enter your target age and the calculator shows whether your current savings plus monthly investing get you there in time — and the extra monthly amount needed if there's a shortfall. Retiring earlier simply means reaching the same number sooner.

Does this account for inflation?

Yes. All results are shown in today's money — your savings grow at the after-inflation ('real') return — so the numbers mean what you think they mean. A $1,000,000 target is $1,000,000 of today's spending power, not a smaller future amount.

What about Social Security or a pension?

This calculator sizes the nest egg you need from your own investments. If you'll have Social Security or a pension, you can subtract that annual income from your target first, then enter the remainder — the portfolio only has to cover the gap.
