What this calculator does
Coast FIRE is the moment you've invested enough that you can stop adding money and still drift to full financial independence by your target retirement age, on compounding alone. This free Coast FIRE calculator works out your coast number — your FIRE number discounted back to today at your expected real return — and tells you whether you're already there. Hit it, and you only need to earn enough to cover today's expenses; every retirement dollar is already handled.
Common questions
What is Coast FIRE?
Coast FIRE is when your current investments, left completely alone, will grow to your full FIRE number by retirement age — so you no longer need to save for retirement at all. You still work to cover current expenses, but the retirement portfolio is on autopilot. It's a popular milestone because it arrives years before full FIRE.
How is the Coast FIRE number calculated?
It's your FIRE number discounted back to today. Take your target (annual spending × 25), then divide by (1 + real return) raised to the number of years until retirement. Reaching FIRE later, or assuming a higher return, both lower the coast number you need today.
Am I already Coast FIRE?
You're Coast FIRE if your current invested savings are at or above your coast number for your chosen retirement age. The calculator shows your progress as a percentage and the age at which your existing savings alone would hit full FIRE, even if you never invest another dollar.
What's the difference between Coast FIRE and Barista FIRE?
Coast FIRE means you stop saving for retirement but still work to cover living costs. Barista FIRE is similar but assumes part-time work (often for benefits) that covers only part of your expenses, with your portfolio topping up the rest. Both are 'partial' milestones on the way to full FIRE.
