What this calculator does

FIRE — Financial Independence, Retire Early — is the point where your invested money is large enough that its returns cover your living costs for good. This free FIRE calculator finds two things: your FIRE number (roughly 25× your annual spending, the classic 4% rule) and the age you reach it, by growing your current savings plus monthly investing after inflation. Change any number and the answer updates instantly.

Common questions

How is my FIRE number calculated?

Your FIRE number is your annual spending divided by your safe withdrawal rate — with the classic 4% rule that's spending × 25. If you spend $40,000 a year, your FIRE number is about $1,000,000. Once your investments reach it, their returns can cover your bills indefinitely.

What is the 4% rule?

The 4% rule says you can withdraw about 4% of your portfolio in your first year of retirement, then adjust for inflation each year, with a high chance the money lasts 30+ years. It's where the 25× multiple comes from (1 ÷ 0.04 = 25). This calculator lets you change the withdrawal rate if you want to be more conservative.

How many years until I reach FIRE?

It depends on three levers: how much you've already invested, how much you add each month, and your return after inflation. The calculator grows all three forward and finds the year your balance crosses your FIRE number. Investing more or spending less both pull the date closer — spending less counts double because it also shrinks the target.

Is this the same as Coast FIRE?

No. Full FIRE means you never have to work again. Coast FIRE means you've invested enough that, without adding another dollar, compounding alone reaches your FIRE number by retirement age. Try the Coast FIRE calculator to see your coast number.
